XEarth (for Windows)

For just the first time in my experience all ten current earthquakes are in the same place - Chile!
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/02/27/chile.quake/index.html

Xearth for Windows is a port of Kirk Johnson's original xearth [local mirror] program to Microsoft Windows. Xearth renders a shaded image of the earth on your desktop, as seen from your favorite vantage point in space. By default, the image is updated every five minutes according to the current position of the sun.

Xearth for Windows works with any 32-bit version of Windows, including 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP. On Windows XP, I have been told that you need to uncheck "lock desktop" in order to see the earth display.

Fear of death behind climate change denial - SmartPlanet

Fear of death behind climate change denial - SmartPlanet

A paper by Cornell scientist Janis L. Dickinson is drawing new attention as an explanation for the rise in climate science denial.

(It’s all explained by Zero Mostel in this classic episode of The Muppet Show.)

In The People Paradox, published last year at Ecology and Society, Dickinson follows up on Ernest Becker’s 1973 work The Denial of Death, suggesting that when people are confronted by death they often react by shoring up their worldview, rejecting anyone or anything which threatens it, and focusing on self-esteem.

Aerospace Giant Building a Gravity Tractor to Deflect Killer Asteroids | Popular Science
NASA astronauts Edward Lu and Stanley Love first proposed using a robotic spacecraft to nudge space rocks away from Earth using the gentle force of gravity a few years ago. Now a European aerospace giant has begun seriously investigating the concept.

Across 50,000 Light Years forums announce Orbit@Home forum

Charlies Web Teams home forum, Across 50,000 Light Years, announces the new Orbit@Home forum.

Orbit@Home is scheduled to go public with the beta phase sometime next month. Some extra participants can help keep the team high in the standings.

Help orbit@home "monitor the impact hazard posed by Near Earth Objects." The project uses the Orbit Reconstruction, Simulation and Analysis (ORSA) framework. More information can be found at the ORSA@work website and in a presentation poster titled Distributed Computing and Near Earth Objects Hazard Monitoring, published by Pasquale Tricarico of Washington State University on November 14, 2004.

The project completed its testing phase on May 28, 2008, and began its public beta test on May 31, 2008.
Update wrote:

For 2010 we plan to run our code on real data, primarily sky coverage data by real NEA's surveys, to produce two main products:

  • a detailed map of the NEA's population, including both known and unknown NEAs, that will show clearly the orbits that are more likely to hide unknown asteroids; this map should improve our estimate of the total number of asteroids with a given brightness or diameter that are still unknown, and help surveys in their search;
  • a sky map updated every night containing the regions in the sky that are more likely to contain unknown NEA's, and make this chart publicly available, so that interested NEAs surveys can test it and assess whether such a tool significantly improves the chances to discover new NEA's
We plan to resume active development in March 2010."

CERN - the European Organization for Nuclear Research

Romania becomes a candidate for accession to CERN
Romanian Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sport, Daniel Petru Funeriu, and CERN Director General, Rolf Heuer, today signed an agreement that formally recognises Romania as a Candidate for Accession to membership of CERN. Romania’s pre-membership will cover a five-year period during which the country’s contributions will ramp up to normal Member State levels, in parallel with Romania's participation in CERN projects.
