Nutritious Rice for the World project (WCG) finished on April 6, 2010

World Community Grid is pleased to announce that as a result of the generous contribution of computing power from our members, the Nutritious Rice for the World project finished on April 6, 2010.

The project was launched on May 12, 2008. While it was active, World Community Grid members processed over 29 million results which required nearly 26,000 years of computing power. This work would have taken about 200 years of time using the computing resources available to the researchers at the University of Washington. Using World Community Grid, this research was completed in less than two years.

(ITHACA, NEW YORK) -- What is described as “a wave of suicides” at Cornell University in the past two semesters is a serious "public health crisis," according to the school's mental health initiatives director Timothy Marchell who added the school was “not out of the woods yet.”

The Ithaca New York Police Department reported four student suicides during the fall 2009 semester, and at least two over the last two months.

It's a departure for Charlies Web Teams to publish this story, but I felt the need.

Recent reports of two celebrity children dying at their own hands made the news and I lost my cousin under similar circumstances last month as well. Soon after tweeting about my cousin, I received a new follower on Twitter. Now that person has started her own blog here,
I am a survivor... here's my story on Blogger!

All of this prompted me to add the SocialVibe widget for "To Write Love On Her Arms" a charity which supports suicide prevention. While not a typical Charlies Web venture and NOT distributed computing, folks can click through to SocialVibe and help me support these efforts. Until now, scientists have only been able to embed living cells in nanoelectronics. Now technology is small enough to perform the reverse.

Romanian Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sport, Daniel Petru Funeriu, and CERN Director General, Rolf Heuer, today signed an agreement that formally recognises Romania as a Candidate for Accession to membership of CERN. Romania’s pre-membership will cover a five-year period during which the country’s contributions will ramp up to normal Member State levels, in parallel with Romania's participation in CERN projects.
