One step closer to identifying lung cancer biomarkers

After a long first stage of exploratory analysis, Mapping Cancer Markers (MCM) began a new, more targeted stage of lung cancer analysis in April 2015. Processing results from the first stage revealed a subset of approximately 1% of the biomarkers that frequently occur in high-scoring signatures. The second stage of the MCM lung cancer study will focus on signatures drawn from this subset of biomarkers.

After performing a Yahoo search of the problem, I decided on a site, then called Computer Cops, later changed to CastleCops to look for help in getting rid of this annoyance.

One of the articles I wrote at this time concerned a new "mystery" illness, called Morgellon's Disease. Little was known then. The condition was characterized by lesions and the emergence of threads from the body. Outbreaks were observed to occur in clusters! Apparently in the ten years since, main stream news still reports little is known about this sometimes debilitating condition. From an April 2015 article in Time about singer Joni Mitchell's struggles with this ailment, Mysterious Morgellons Disease Explained:

Morgellons is not very well understood and is controversial within the medical community. It’s clear people who say they have Moregellons are suffering from something, but many doctors think it’s a psychological rather than physical condition. Research trying to determine what the disorder is has been very inconclusive.

Open science: sharing our clean water breakthrough data with all scientists

Summary The Computing for Clean Water team is pleased to announce that the breakthrough paper we published online last month on the use of nanotechnology for more efficient water filtration will be available in the August print edition of Nature Nanotechnology. With our results published, we're now making the underlying data available to other interested scientists and discussing the attention our work has gotten, both from international experts in the field and from the world media.

It's been a month since Nature Nanotechnology published our Computing for Clean Water paper online, detailing how water flow through carbon nanotubes can be dramatically accelerated, potentially improving access to clean water for millions of people. This week, the print edition of the journal will be published, so it's a good moment to make sure that we're sharing the benefits of our research with the wider scientific community. Today, we want to announce that we're fulfilling a commitment to open data, and we also want to share with you some of the responses our work has already gotten.

Amidst the cases of the Ebola virus entering the United States, the question has been raised as to why there has not been any research or fund-raising towards fighting this disease; among the many possible answers to this question, perhaps the most disturbing has been that the Ebola virus primarily affected a third-world country.

Nutritious Rice for the World project (WCG) finished on April 6, 2010

World Community Grid is pleased to announce that as a result of the generous contribution of computing power from our members, the Nutritious Rice for the World project finished on April 6, 2010.

The project was launched on May 12, 2008. While it was active, World Community Grid members processed over 29 million results which required nearly 26,000 years of computing power. This work would have taken about 200 years of time using the computing resources available to the researchers at the University of Washington. Using World Community Grid, this research was completed in less than two years.

Folding@home researcher Greg Bowman was awarded the 2010 Kuhn Paradigm Shift Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS) for his talk on two paradigm shifts resulting from Folding@home:
1) the new methods that Folding@home uses to simulate protein folding, misfolding, etc, and
2) the results themselves, which suggest a significant change in protein folding theory.

Sky Valley Chronicle Washington State News | BREAKING NEWS | “WAVE” OF STUDENT SUICIDES AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY

(ITHACA, NEW YORK) -- What is described as “a wave of suicides” at Cornell University in the past two semesters is a serious "public health crisis," according to the school's mental health initiatives director Timothy Marchell who added the school was “not out of the woods yet.”

The Ithaca New York Police Department reported four student suicides during the fall 2009 semester, and at least two over the last two months.

It's a departure for Charlies Web Teams to publish this story, but I felt the need.

Recent reports of two celebrity children dying at their own hands made the news and I lost my cousin under similar circumstances last month as well. Soon after tweeting about my cousin, I received a new follower on Twitter. Now that person has started her own blog here,
I am a survivor... here's my story on Blogger!

All of this prompted me to add the SocialVibe widget for "To Write Love On Her Arms" a charity which supports suicide prevention. While not a typical Charlies Web venture and NOT distributed computing, folks can click through to SocialVibe and help me support these efforts. While they are there, they may find a charity they would like to help as well.
